This was the very first sentence I wrote when considering the Airbnb design tools team vision.

Compiling the library

It became clear that we needed more systematic ways to guide and leverage our collective efforts. While we recognized these challenges within the company, I believe they are symptoms of larger software industry problems. Working in software development and design, we are often required to ship one-off solutions.

Not only does large art look high-end, but it can also create an impactful focal point and help tie your color scheme together. That means every decision we make needs to be done with a global lens. Our community is also incredibly diverse, and making sure everyone feels like they belong on Airbnb is in part the responsibility of our user experience design. Having built several internal tools on top of Sketch in 2016, we knew the potential of scripting it to manipulate files as we wanted. Developers can leverage Bit’s open-source CLI tool to build, test and publish individual components from any project or library in minutes, no refactoring or configurations required. Bit seamlessly detects and tracks components in your project, defines each component’s dependency graph and wraps each component in an isolated capsule so it can be used and run anywhere. While creating these components, we collected them in a master file called the library, which we referred to throughout the design process. One day, while putting together a last-minute prototype, our team was able to create nearly 50 screens within just a few hours by using the framework our library provided. We course-corrected when necessary, and started defining our standardized components. By focusing on the methods of working across disciplines, building better tools, and creating a unified system, we can use our time to apply creativity to solve bigger challenges. Over the coming months, we aim to be fully transparent and release detailed case studies on how our system is defined and what decisions go into designing components, patterns, and rules.

Gradually, your components will be added to your reusable collection. It’s an ever-growing and ever-evolving source of truth for the basic parts from which your entire product experience is made of.
